Drove out to the very tips of Long Island from NYC. Taking I-495 along the center of Long Island we passed "The Great Gatsby" territory (Manhasset, Great Neck et al) and turned south to West Hampton where we drove along the Westhampton Dunes and then turned inland to Shinnecock Bay and round to Southampton. We then followed the Montauk Highway and turned north to Sag Harbor and then caught the Ferry to Shelter Island where we were staying for the night at the Ram's Head Inn. That evening we visited Montauk Point (and the oldest Lighthouse in Ney York state) at the tip of the southern fork of Long Island, passing through East Hampton en route (no celebrities spotted). The following day was a drive north of Shelter Island through Greenport and out to Orient Point, the tip of the northen fork of Long Island, where ferries depart for New London (Connecticut) on the mainland. Heading back for New York we stopped at a Long Island vineyard (Raphael) to complete the trip.
