New York December 2005

Check out the very famous photo of skyscraper workers lunching on a girder hanging in mid-air, then compare it with the sculpture we found at Union Square on the back of a van!

Brooklyn Bridge

Everyone has seen pictures of this iconic Manhattan bridge. It opened in May 1883 and sits 135ft above the East River. It is well-known for its photogenic nature given its aesthetically-pleasing geometric layout.

Central Park

We took a carriage around Central Park but I think we got ripped-off! They operate as licensed taxis and so you pay a $36 flat fee for the first hour, however our carriage ride lasted about ten minutes. Hmmm, I think someone is making money here. Mind you I was glad to get shot of the smell of horsey-ness!!

Check out the iconic NYC photo of Central Park's Gapstow Bridge - no doubt you will have spotted it in a few films and countless photos!

Grand Central Station

Grand Central is lit up bright red over the Festive Season for some reason. And inside they have a Festive laser show playing on the ceiling of the cavernous main hall.

The Guggenheim is undergoing extensive exterior work - they've stripped off all the white paint so it's bare concrete with scaffolding outside!

New York Stock Exchange

When I walked out my apartment this was the view - in fact to drive to the NYC apartment you have to get through the cordon of Federal officials (and their sniffer dog) because it's so close to the NYSE. Anyway in true American spirit they replace they gigantic flag with equally gigantic lights over the festive season.

Radio City Music Hall

I toured Radio City Music Hall back in July and that was some sight to see. However attending a show at this iconic venue yields an inexplicable excitement of its own - such a pinnacle of design and function which is exercised fully for two months per year with the Christmas Spectacular which includes 40 Santas, 8 sheep, 2 horses, a donkey and 3 camels. Oh and the world famous Rockettes - now who could forget them!!

Rockefeller Plaza

It all happens here around Christmas; in fact at the end of "Saturday Night Live" everyone piled onto the rink to skate around (the studio is on floor 3 of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, right behind the Christmas Tree).

The Late Show With David Letterman

Years ago I used to love watching The Late Show With David Letterman however I lost the use of cable television and wasn't able to see the show anymore. Anyway when I knew I'd be in NYC I applied for tickets a few months in advance and I managed to answer their trivia question about the show correctly and then found myself in the audience, four rows from the front of the stage. An all-round awesome experience, and not one many people can put their name to (or even prove they were there with a screenshot!). Although Alec Baldwin was pretty close unfortunately Shakira (who was also performing that night) wasn't that close dammit!
